The Project

BG Buddy is a diary for diabetic patients to help them get their lives back on track by, not only recording their blood sugar levels and providing reminders to take insulin and medication. But by assisting and recommending different foods and activities so they can still enjoy a normal life. I always strive to bring people the best experiences possible, using my unique perspective and just trying my best to be empathetic and understanding to help give people and products what they need.

Research

Before we can fix a problem, we need to understand it first. So we decided to try and understand what diabetes is, the symptoms of those with the condition, and the major lifestyle needs to make to live their daily lives.

We did this through our research by conducting interviews with participants with both Type 1 and 2 diabetes and secondary research done by the team to help us see the entire scope of the issues people face. We hoped we could use these insights gained to create a solution that would make their lives even a little simpler.

From our research, we noticed our participants suffered from:

  1. Vision Loss
  2. Remembering to check their blood sugar levels
  3. Being reminded to take their insulin or medication
  4. Knowing how much insulin to take with their meal

How We Solved It

Introducing BGBuddy is a diabetic diary that helps users:

  1. Be notified whenever their blood sugar is too High or Low.
  2. Allows them to keep a record of their daily, weekly, or monthly readings.
  3. Set reminders to take their insulin or medication.
  4. Allows them to keep a diary of meal plans, which lets them know how many carbs they will consume.

Home Screen

The home screen displays the user's latest blood sugar reading along with whether the reading is Normal, High, or Low. This screen also provides an option for the user to explore Helpful tips to get their blood sugar levels back to normal if their readings were ever to High or Low.

Helpful Tips

Here is a popup with tips on how to potentially raise or lower the user's blood sugar levels, depending on their reading.

View Your Readings

Users can view their daily, weekly, or monthly readings in a graph or calendar format while also receiving feedback on their last blood sugar reading.

Your Insulin Reminders

Allows users to set reminders and get notifications to take their insulin or diabetic medication.

See Your Diet

Users can view the meals they had for the day and see how these food items would affect their blood sugar levels.
